2020 - an interesting year!

I don't want to dwell on the negatives of 2020 - we have all had them. Instead I am trying to take some positives, one of which was a drawing challenge. An ex student and friend on Facebook contacted me with a special commission; a portrait of his and his partner's adoptive son Marcus.

At first I thought....'What?! I can only draw animals...' I was incredibly flattered, but this was way out of my skill set. But then I gave it some thought and, to be honest, I was encouraged by the thought of using a different colour palette. So I said that I would give it a go and that if he wasn't happy, I wouldn't charge him!

I got sent an array of photos of a very cute and smiley Marcus. I deliberated. I made endless cups of tea. I had set up my drawing board and then found so many more urgent jobs to do to (displacement activities my parents call it!). Finally, prompted by an ever helpful and nagging daughter I started. And I am so glad I did. It took a lot longer than my usual 'sitters' but I learnt so much about skin tone and shadows, face shape and expressions.

The final result, I am really very pleased and proud of it and, more importantly, my friend loves it. Marcus even recognised himself!!!!!

I now have another human commission for March and I will not leave it so long to get started!

Roll on 2021 and more drawing challenges. 😊
